| About | Funeral for Stena Nicholas, 82, will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson. Mrs. Nicholas died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Stanton County Hospital, Johnson. She was born Nov. 5, 1916, at Lewis, the daughter of Leroy and Carrie (Crabtree) Cross. A graduate of Stanton County High School, she attended college at Emporia and Long Beach, Calif. A Stanton County resident since 1928, Mrs. Nicholas taught school at Mitchell and Johnson Grade School. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's Society, served as a Sunday School teacher, was a member of Cosmos Club and Pleasant Hour Club, and served as a community leader in the 4-H program. On June 12, 1940, she married Ivan Nicholas at Johnson. He survives. Other survivors are three sons, William Nicholas and Joel Nicholas, both of Johnson, and Dr. Kenton Nicholas, Greeley, Colo.; three sisters, Marcile Nicholas, Johnson, June Wang, Phoenix, and Lorraine Wearne, Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nelle Cross, and an infant son, Don Ivan. Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson. Memorials are to the church or Stanton County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home. |
