| About | Darius is the son of John Berriman (J.B.) and Dora Belle (Boren) Cockrum, Darius graduated from Johnson High School and attended college for two years before coming back to Johnson to work at the Johnson State Bank that his father and cousins had earlier founded. He served in the Army Air Corp Finance Department during WWII. He returned home and purchased a farm and ranch in northwest Stanton County. Darius saw Stanton County go from grassland to dry land farming, to dust bowl days, to deep well irrigation. He enjoyed his family, church activities, reading, banking, farming, ranching and retirement as he and June traveled in their motor home visiting all fifty states with various recreational vehicle clubs. Darius and June were selected as Stanton County Pioneer Couple of the Year in 1998. Darius was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and was a past Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Johnson State Bank. He was a charter member of the Soil Conservation District, charter member of the K.&C. Credit Union, served on the ASCS County Committee, served for thirty years on the Johnson Co-op Board and was president for nine, served on the Manter and Johnson school boards, was a member and Past Noble Grand of IOOF Lodge, and past president of Farm Bureau. Darius is survived by his wife, June Hess, one sone Darrell K. Cockrum and wife Wynn of Johnson, Kansas; three daughters, Carolyn L. Baylor of Lithia, Florida, Nancy J. Murray and husband Harold of Kimberling City, Missouri, and Joyce E. Baughman and husband Gary of Hugoton, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Ashley Fiss, Dirk Cockrum, Con Cockrum, Bryan Baylor, Dawn (Baylor) Knapek, Ethan, and Duane Baughman; seven great-grandchildren, Lawson Fiss, Taylor Fiss, Dillon Cockrum, Jackson Cockrum, Owen Baylor, Spencer Baylor and Kaitlin Knapek. He was preceded in death by one brother Leroy Cockrum and son-in-law Edward N. Baylor. |
