About Vila Ruth Ray, 89, of Johnson City, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.

She was born July 26, 1914, in Rice County, to James Wesley and Ermine Bradley Dimitt. She attended a country school southeast of the Plymell community in Finney County before the family moved in 1929 to Stanton County, where she graduated from Stanton County High School in 1933. After graduating from Venus Academy of Beauty, Wichita, with a degree in cosmetology, she worked as a cosmetologist in Greensburg.

Mrs. Ray received state recognition as a 50-year member of the Eastern Star Ulysses Chapter No. 471 and the Kansas Extension Association For Family and Community Education. She also received recognition for 10 years of volunteer service in the beauty shop of the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an active member of the United Methodist Women, "Come Join Us" Sunday school class, Merry Maid's Social Club, Cosmos Club and the Helluo Librorum Club, and had served as a Stanton County 4-H club leader and Sunday school teacher for numerous years.

On Dec. 27, 1936, she married Verle E. Ruth at Johnson City. He died in March 1972. On Aug. 10, 1987, she married Daniel S. Ray at Johnson City. He died in March 1994. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Dimitt.

Survivors include three sons, David Ruth of Sparks, Nev., Darrel Ruth of Johnson City, and Donald Ruth of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; a brother, James Dimitt of Johnson City; a sister, Nina Seyb of Pretty Prairie; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the church or Stanton County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
