Born in Haviland, Kansas, on March 31, 1935, James was the fourth of four boys born to Lola (Hague) Campbell and Herbert Campbell Sr. He graduated in 1953 from Stanton County High School in Johnson, Kansas, where the family farmed in the Big Bow and Johnson Communities. He attended college at Panhandle A & M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma, graduating with a B.S. in General Science in 1957. After completing his bachelor's degree, he pursued additional studies at multiple universities through a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission including Radiation Biology, Astronomy and Mathematics, and Radiological Monitoring.

On March 6th, 1982, James married Angela Beer in Goodwell, Oklahoma. In later years, until the end, he referred to her as the "love of his life". Together they had three children, Heather, Brooke and Blake. For thirty years, they made their home in Booker, Texas. He attended the Booker Friends Church where he enjoyed his Sunday School discussions with Assoc. Pastor, Pat Hout, and he volunteered to teach Adult ESL classes at the church.

"Doc," as he was affectionately called by many of his former students and colleagues, taught high school science for 54 years. He spent thirty-one years of his career teaching at Hooker High School, and then twenty-three years of his career were spent at Booker High School in Booker, Texas. He particularly enjoyed teaching Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Mr. Campbell used his unique sense of humor to develop and foster his students' love of science while challenging them to see beyond their abilities. He retired from teaching in the Spring of 2012.

One of his greatest joys included loving on his grandchildren. They affectionately called him "Pop". As a nod to his Scottish heritage, he designated himself as CEO of our "Campbell Clan". He was so proud of each of his children. He loved all things nature and shared happy moments with his family in the backyard, watching thunderstorms, naming insects, watching birds, playing with snakes, going camping and fishing. He also enjoyed photography, motorcycles, and shooting guns.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert Campbell Jr. and Howard Campbell; an infant son, Eric Wendell Campbell; and a daughter, Carrie Campbell.

He is survived by his wife, Angela; three daughters, Jill Campbell of Amarillo, TX, Heather Campbell Sessing (Mark) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Tasha Brooke Campbell Clevenger (James) of Goldsby, OK; one son, Blake Campbell (Janell) of Perryton, TX; a brother, Richard Campbell of Thornton, CO; his grandchildren, Lucas James Sanders, Matthew and Stella Sessing; Charley, Ellie, and Kennedy Clevenger; Isabella and Gabrielle Heck and Baker James Campbell.

The family suggests memorials be made in his memory to Medical Center League House, 7000 W. Amarillo Boulevard, Amarillo, Texas 79106.
