Loraine Staker, age 97, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson. She was born on March 5, 1911, in Conway Springs, Kansas, to Thomas Hendrick Miles (1883-1967) and Edith Nellore Green Miles (1883-1952). She married Carl C. Staker on June 21, 1931. With two brief exceptions, her early childhood and during World War II, Loraine lived in Johnson her entire life. She graduated from Stanton County Community High School in 1929. During World War II, she worked at the Alcoa Aluminum Corporatin in Los Angeles, California. Loraine was selfless in her devotion to her husband and two children. She loved the house they built in 1949 and always welcomed her children's friends into her home. She loved traveling with her family, loved to get in her car and go and was an accomplished seamstress. Loraine diligently excersised every single day of her life until a fall caused mobility problems in the Fall of 2002. She was a life-long member of the Helluo Librorum Women's Club. Most of all, she was devout in her Christian Faith, deeply committed to her church, Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, and to her Church Family. She was loved by all who knew her and will be severely missed. Precedind her in death were her husband (1909-1974); her parents: her grandson Geoffrey Dirk Ellis (1965-1995): sister Mabel Marie Miles Steuckert (1912-2002); father and mother-in-law Fred H. and Myrtle Ann Morris Staker; her first cousins Rachel Shetlar Irwin, Blanche Miles Baber and Bernice Miles Poland. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff and nursing personal at the Stanton County Long Term Care Facility for their exemplary care of Loraine during the past 6 years. Special thanks to Virginia Snell, Dan and Dixie Senestraro and Ella Mae Julian for their abiding friendship and kindness to our mother. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that any tributes be directed to either the Stanton County Scholarship Fund or the Stanton County Hospital and Long Term Facility.
