Brown's sports prowess was evident during his time at Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois, where he was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2003. He then went on to play college basketball for Michigan State University.

His professional career started impressively as he was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 25th overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft.
