Smith departs from an ordinary tale as he initially spent two years working in a factory before enrolling at East Mississippi Junior College in 1993 and ultimately transferring to the University of Houston. As a running back for the Houston Cougars football team, Smith set several records, including the longest touchdown in school history at 96 yards and six touchdowns in one game. He rushed for 1,847 yards and 19 touchdowns in his 21 games with Houston.

Following his college career, Smith was drafted in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. His career involved stints with the Buffalo Bills from 1997 to 2000, the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2003, the Tennessee Titans in 2004, and the New Orleans Saints in 2005.
