Favorite School Memory | Just to name a few: Marching Band Band Camp Football half-time shows & after-game dances Pep rallies Blossom Parades Singing "My Funny Valentine" Variety Show 1971 Band scholarship CMU Making the first 2 cuts in the Miss St. Joseph contest Dancing at center of Variety Show chorus line 3 years running! Crayon drawings received from the elementary schools in appreciation for our annual Christmas tour posted on the choir room walls revealed one tiny little breach of our formal black & white dress code: I had neglected to remove the bright red yarn bow tied in my hair! Nearly every single drawing captured it perfectly! Dennis Bowen delighted in humiliating me in front of the class. Don't think my GPA ever recovered! Singing complete version of "Leaving on a jet plane" for my choir audition in front of the class when everyone else just sang "Twinkle, twinkle little star." Guess I was behind the door when the master plan was handed out. Missing the band bus to the MSU half-time show in the wee morning hours after Don's band "Against The Grain" played at the after game dance. We had changed out of our band uniforms for the dance & brought them to my house in a heap, as Don was going to crash at our house for a few hours, drive us back to SJHS at 4am to drop off his parent's car in the parking lot for them to retrieve later, and we would board the bus for the trip. As I recall, instead of arriving at SJHS for a 4AM departure, our alarm went off at 4 AM! You have never seen such a flurry of activity & chaos, as we grabbed pants and retreated to respective dressing rooms, yanking suspenders & diving into jackets, only to discover we had mixed up our uniform pants. Frantic yelling & entreaties to my mother for assistance had her jockeying back & forth between the 2 rooms, restoring pants to their rightful owners. As we stumbled out the door clutching spats, gloves, and hats, with me on the verge of a melt-down regarding grade consequences (I was only a sophomore) and Don formulating a game plan on the run, we left my mother with brief assurances of road safety and these now infamous instructions from Don Klos: "Just call my parents later and tell them we are driving their car to Lansing for the MSU half-time show." Springing a surprise road trip on your parents is one thing; being catapulted into the messenger role and delivering the "last words" to total strangers is quite another! Regardless, the message was delivered in person and the parents spent the afternoon huddled in front of the TV scanning hundreds of ant-sized band members, trying to catch a glimpse of their miniscule faces to reassure themselves we had survived the trip without incident. (Remember, these were the pre-cell phone days!) I remember my ill-concealed disappointment when I was expressly forbidden by the school to make the return trip with Don ...(read more) |
