Alumni Stories
John Ross Walker
Class of 1975
The best thing that happened to me during my three years at Spencer was being mentored by Sergeant Burk. Gordon was not only our rifle team coach, but he was that guiding light and I am certain that without his tutelage, I would have dropped out my junior year and enlisted in the military. The other thing that I look back with great pride is my time spent as a member of the best dam rifle team in the Chattahoochee Valley. The skills I learn on the firing line underneath the school auditorium would follow me to the University of Georgia and into my Navy career. My only regret is that I pushed to graduate early (attended summer school two years in a row) and missed out on being a member of the 1976 State Championship Team with David, Glenn and John Moeller, Denise Canella, and Carlos Villa-Gomez. Still chuckle when I stumble across my Varsity lettermen’s jacket and remember the stink it raised with the football and basketball team members when Gordon paid for those our of his own pocket after we won the Superintendent’s Trophy in 1973 only to do it again in 1974 and eventually retire the trophy in 1975. We were walking with giants and didn’t know it.
