A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of William Thomas and Betsy Fowler Maynard of the home. He was a junior at Spartanburg High School, where he was a member of the chess team and the Junior Engineering Technical Society, which won first place in the state competition in 1997-98 and also placed 10th in the national competition. He also was a Duke Scholar.
