| About Me | "If thou art pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs thee, but thine own judgment about it. And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgment now." Marcus Aurelius I was born to a single mother in the industrial city of Essen, Germany and recall living most of my first five years there in a couple of different orphanages. I arrived in the United States in 1965 and grew up in an orphanage and foster care in the Baltimore suburbs. After barely managing to graduate high school, I briefly worked in a paint factory amidst all kinds of toxic debris and ended up in a severe state of suicidal and melancholic thinking that this was all there was to life. As a result, I made the fateful decision that the Marine Corps was my way out of an otherwise unhappy situation. I still have no regrets about having made this decision. In addition to learning about the various methods to kill another human being, I learned the Russian language and had a lot of very interesting experiences which opened my eyes to another and greater world. Having been a precocious child with a flair for helping others solve their problems at a young age, I assumed that my calling in life was to become a psychotherapist, however, I fought that particular calling until my early 30s. After discharge from the Marine Corps and a very brief sales career, I pursued my college studies in ernest and eventually went on to graduate school only to be activated in my first year after the outbreak of Operation Desert Storm. As with so many other challenges in my life, I managed to survive that one as well and did eventually finish graduate school in order to be able to obtain my professional license and begin practicing psychotherapy. Since then, I am richly rewarded for having had the opportunity to help facilitate positive emotional changes in many people over the resulting years. Psychotherapy is truly an art which I believe requires a strong belief and trust in one's own intuition as well as absolute respect for the inherent strengths which exist in ALL human beings to be successful in this endeavor. It is not an activity to be taken lightly and in my estimation cannot be adequately learned in books or the classroom alone. In addition to working in private practice, corrections, psychiatric hospitals, community mental health, as well as behavioral managed care, I did a three-year stint working with the terminally-ill and their families. I currently work for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs helping our heroes. These men and women deserve all the help they can get. As of August, 2010, I began my studies towards earning a Doctorate in Psychology degree and with my usual stubborn determination, God's help and the loving support of my dear wife, I will complete it. I currently live in the Philadelphia suburbs with my wife Laura, stepson Matthew, my two dear chihuahuas, Lucy and Lil...(read more) |
