Army, 8 Years
Registered for "The Draft", in my junior year here, then upon [1968] graduation, I volunteered to enlist: US ARMY, then after Basic Combat Trng @ Ft. Gordon, Ga; it was onto Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, for Medical Corps training. Especially now, I again want to thank Mr. Melvin Baker, Band Director, for allowing me (alumni), to ride along to Super Bowl 3, with his Royal Lancers (strange now performing), it was too cool. Anyway, then I went to Vietnam (first time), assigned to The BIG RED ONE (1st Infantry Division), Battalion Aid, in LaiKhe, down in III Corps, where during the TET Offensive, we took in, about 23% of the casualties, of South Vietnam. Due to our government's spraying of Agent Orange (+), as I found out, a few years ago, I got an "unknown" bladder infection. Had to be choppered out, down south, then USAF to Yokohama, Japan, then onwards to The Presidio, San Francisco, California. Then I was eventually returned to duty, at Ft. Benning, Ga., which was the grrrreatest stateside duty, but I truly missed "doing something worthwhile", sooo, I went back (yep, that's right) to Vietnam (Summer of 1970). I was told, that since "I was experienced", that they could really use me: they put me with The Ivy Division: 4th Infantry Division, as a Combat Medic, in the jungles of II Corps (sometimes close to Laos [unofficially, of course] ). This was the lonnnnngest 9 weeks of my life, for sure, but it was cut off bc I sustained several/severe back injuries, and had to be choppered out of that crappy jungle (away from my guys, DAMN IT), eventually to Japan again ("thank you USAF"), then onward to Walter Reed ICU (caught lice, great huh?), and eventually released back to profiled duty, at the 8th Evac Hospital, in California. Got married (1st time) there, then was in California National Guard (x3). Sometimes I do miss it (all in all, but ........), but my awards, medals, etc is NOT what's cracked up to be. "Oh well, that was then, and now is here: I'm in God's Army now." Amen & Amen
