About Me | Born Aug 26, 1938 to Frances E. McGehee and Odd Lonzo Jones. Raised in a Christian family, unremarkable youth, Cummings Grade School, South Side High School,(1952-1956) loved sports (church baseball and school football), average athlete, Joined USCG July 15 1956 attended boot camp at Cape May NJ, (CG Football team) attended FTA School Groton CT( 7th out of 8 graduating. Assigned to CGC Absecon, Norfolk VA for 3 years, made two Cadet Cruises, was in life boat crew that picked up survivor form German Training ship Pamir sunk by Hurricane Carrie in 1957. Promoted to 3rd, second and first class petty officer on Absecon. Transferred to CGC Unimack, Cape May NJ where we trained 6 by 8 reserves for three years. Transferred to CGC WestwInd (ice breaker) 1n 1963 made one trip north to Thule Greenland.Transferred to 3rd CG Dist ene (may 1964 to Oct 1967) pending Promotion to Chief Petty Officer Oct 1 1964, Served with COMEASTAREA EVALUATORS (Oct 1967 to june 1969, transferred to USCG TRACEN Governors Island (JUne 1969 thru JUne 1972) as Senior Instructor Ordnance "C" Schools. Advanced to Senior Chief (E8) on 16 Feb 1970 and Master Chief the same year on 1 December 1970. transferred to CG Institute Oklahoma City in June 1972 and to HQ, OMR August 5 1974 where I received the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. I retired on 1 October 1977 to pursue a career in Business Communications Products with 3M Company. With 3M Company I started with training customers in the use of the LINOLEX Word Processor. In a short time I was moved to SE Virginia as a Trainer and Sales Rep. As new products including Facsimile, Whisper Writer/Whisper Screen came on line I did very well being in the top 10% nationally in our product lines for two years. 3M had a need for one person that could sell and service facsimile units in the Florida Panhandle area. I was picked and moved to Pensacola. In 1967 3M made a deal where we were moved into Harris Lanier with a 90 day retention guarantee and in July 1968 I was let go. January 1989 I was hired at NADEP Pensacola as an aviation electrician where I have been doing modifications to H60, H53, C9 and C-130 military Aircraft with ServAir, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Crestview Aerospace and L3 Vertex companies. When aviation field team was no longer available I took a few years off while Shirley went through Brest Cancer and I was treated for Prostate cancer. I had a short job to prototype one C130 for BAE Company. then in 2011, I was hired through Landrum Staffing to work at the GE Wind Energy Plant here in Pensacola. This lasted until March 2014. I am now actively involved in maintenance at Church, Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution,lots of Yard Work for/with Shirley, and our two Standard Poodles, Prince Charles and Princess Mia.
