Mark Howe

Class of 1973

I attended class and played sports with Mark at Birney Junior High and at S-L. He was a great athlete and teammate. His hockey ability became so great he no longer had time to play high school sports. He was 16 years old and a member of the U.S. Olympic Hockey team. He brought his Silver Medal from the 1972 Olympics in to show his classmates. He turned professional after graduation and played in the World Hockey Association and was named Rookie of the Year in 1974. He played 6 seasons in the WHA and another 16 seasons in the National Hockey League. In the NHL, with the Philadelphia Flyers, Mark played in the 1981, 1983, 1986 and 1988 All Star games. He also played in two Stanley Cup finals. He is the Chief Pro Scout for the Detroit Red Wings earning Stanley Cup rings for 1997,1998, 2002 and 2008. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame in 2001 and the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.
