Making a Difference

You may have heard about the two SEHS senior boys, Connor Ausland and Jack Harnsongkram, who tragically drowned on the Oregon Coast on the 804 Trail a year ago, February 5, 2011. There is a detailed article about it in Sunday’s RG (February 12th).

The article may also be found in Sunday’s Register Guard, the Oregon Life section (E-1). The article is called “Building a Beacon.”

Their parents, and others, are raising money to put up a Coastal Safety Marker at the spot where a wave came in and swept them off their feet.

Jack’s Mom wants you to know that this is not to be a Memorial but a Marker. It is to educate people on what happened there and how to prevent it from happening again (e.g., don’t turn your back on the ocean, know the tides, watch for logs, etc…stuff we all know but too often forget or don’t warn others, when we see them being unsafe).

They have raised over half of the donations towards the $20,000 needed to build the Marker. It is all designed and waiting for the funding.

I have contacted the office at SEHS to let them know that we would like to get as many of the alumni as possible to donate, as a gift from our school as a whole.

We already have many classmates who have committed to doing this. Checks can be sent directly to the school (put “Your Class Year Donation to Coastal Marker” in the memo line).

Checks may be sent to:

They are also taking donations online , click on “make a contribution” (you can donate by PayPal or credit card). If you make the payment on line, at the last step (confirming your payment), there is a link to put in a message that can be used to specify your year.

Or, you can call the SEHS Finance Office and talk to Joni de Saint Phalle. She can take your credit card information over the phone. She is also available to answer any questions you might have; you can call her or contact her via email
Let’s make our Class proud and make a donation that may help save a life!

Thank you!
