I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and classmate, Karen Matthews. As our Class of ’76 Secretary, Karen brought kindness, intelligence, and a steady grace that made a lasting impact on all of us who worked alongside her. She was a caring, generous soul who always gave more than she received, and her presence made our senior year—and every room she entered—better.
The last passage Karen wrote in my yearbook, “Remember all the good times we had throughout the years at Southern Senior High School and cherish them in your heart, but most of all REMEMBER ME!”
Today, those words feel especially poignant. We do remember her—her warmth, her spirit, and the way she made people feel seen and valued.
Karen will be missed by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her throughout her life. Please know she is remembered with great fondness and gratitude.
