Class of 1979
Navy, 4 Years

BRANCH: USNAVY (1982-1986)
STATIONED: Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. Kings Bay.GA
RATE/RANK: Petty Officer 3rd Class Machinery Repairman
DUTIES: I was assigned to 1 of 4 tugboats. Our job was to go out and assist a sub that was returning to port and also take any sub back out to sea. We also patrolled the waters so noone could come or go without proper authorization. As a machinery repairman I was responsilbe for maintance on the tugboat. I would make replacement parts using a lathe. milling machine, or drill press. Keeping the tug in good running order was important because we could be called at any time to go retrieve a sub. My rate was also in a fireman class
so I was trained how to handle onboard fires and assisting any injured ppl off the ship to safety.
I never left the states ....I did get to see a sub from all 3 classes...I also got to see up close a SR-71. which is a stelth aircraft. At the time it was the best of its class. It was an awesome site to see!

I'm proud to have served my country and in Sept 1986 I received an Honorable Discharge. Although it was during a time of peace I took my duty very serious. My freedom is something I don't take for granted, it was earned because men and women chose to protect it! I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN VET!
