Phillip S. Waldrop, Ph.D.
Class of 1964
The person I am recommending as a distinguished Alumni is Phillip Waldrop, because of all his accomplishments after leaving South Side High school in 1964. He is an excellent role model for others who are attending and graduating from South Side High school. Following are some of his accomplishments:
•B.S. degree from Ball State, including induction to Epsilon Pi Tau International Honorary for Professions in Technology (honored by Laureate level in 1997)
•Taught in the field of Industrial Education for 7 years at Heritage High School in East Allen County
•M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University
•Assistant Professor at University of North Texas, Denton Texas, 1978-82
•Leadership roles in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers along with industrial research and consulting led to joining LTV Aerospace & Defense Company in1982, with advanced technology R&D service as Manufacturing Technology Manager for the LTV Missiles Division, Military Aircraft Division Industrial Modernization Program Manager - B-2 "Stealth Bomber" Aircraft, and Strategic Operations Development Manager - Spain Operations (in Seville, Spain)
•Accepted invitation by Ohio University College of Engineering & Technology for honored service in endowed chair as Stocker Visiting Professor. Returned to academia full time in 1995, joining Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA. Retired as tenured Professor in 2011 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, but with continuing service teaching several online graduate courses in the field of industrial management.
•Author and co-author of over 80 conference papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and the textbooks Lean World Class Manufacturing and The World Class Manufacturing Enterprise, the latter used in national award-winning enterprise simulation laboratory course, honored by the Freedoms Foundation's 2004 Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education.
•Volunteer services have included Service Director, Rotary Club of Downtown
Statesboro (GA); Industry Division President and Management Division President, Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE); Board of Directors, Composites Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE); following 35 years of active involvement in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and 2010 SME Award of Merit, current service (among other assignments) involves SME presidential appointment as a member of the Manufacturing Education & Research Steering Committee and the Accreditation Committee in pursuit of revitalization of the U.S. manufacturing industrial base.
