| About | John passed away at the age of 18 at college in a swimming accident, and the world lost a wonderful soul as he was a childhood friend and a person who touched the hearts of all who knew him.. I spent many years with John when we were on the Salem Swim and Tennis Club Team He was a top level diver, award winning swimmer, top knotch skiier and partipated like many of us in all high school activities.. John was a wonderful boy from a loving family, who in high school developed early into a wonderful man....many of us think of him especially now... It won't be long until our 50th anniversary, but he will never be forgotten by all of at South Salem High. dan burda |

Among John's events were the 200yd freestyle which I Believe he swam in 1:52. He went to state. I think he swam long distance events like the ,400 yd freestyle.

I developed an interest in swimming because of John. I remember his mother Delia would take us in their VW van to swim meets to places like McMinnville. I was on the SSHS swimming team with John fall 1968 thru the fall of 1970. He was our best swimmer. His brother Mark was on the team with us fall 1968 w/ Mr Mossman as our coach. John took swimming very seriously. His younger sister was also a good swimmer. The last time I saw John was homecoming Dec 1971 at a South basketball. John Denecke
