Clayton Livengood and Roberto (as we called him) were friends for many years before I came to SALEM in 1958 for my junior year. In my senior year ROBERTO was my locker partner so thru him I met CLAYTON., The three of us had lunch together each day. While CLAYTON was a large man, he could have a football lineman but I think he had no use for football. Robert, on the other hand, was small, slender and reminded me of KEVIN'S best friend PAUL on WONDER YEARS. The two of them walking together reminded me of MUTT and JEFF. ROBERTO had this up-personality, every day a new adventure for him. His positivity really had a good impact on me, being a navy brat and once again the new kid in town. Last time I saw him was 1965, I came home on XMAS leave from the navy and CLAYTON drove me over to where ROBERTO and his new wife were living as they were WILLAMETTE students now. The next time to see anyone, I saw CLAYTON working in a store in 1977, after my navy and college graduation. It was then I learned ROBERTO had passed away several years after his wife had been killed. Of all the possible endings, that would be the last one I would guess at. I kicked myself that I did not take down his address and keep in touch. I made the mistake of thinking he would always be there. Very recently I was surprised to hear of CLAYTON's passing in 2012. He got tired of knocking around doing this and that and finally went to law school and became a lawyer. Farewell, old friends, hope to see you when it's my time.
