Alumni Stories
Richard Dahm
Class of 1985
It's a strange sight, but the corner of our desk is literally packed with awards. Some you've heard of (Prime Time Emmys) and some you may not know (Producers Guild Awards). There are even several Peabodys in the mix. Unfortunately, my husband is too busy writing jokes for Stephen Colbert to make a suitable place for his trophies. So for now, they sit in a clump and pose a great challenge when dusting.
Rich is an alum of Waukesha South High School, and has been writing comedy for years. It may sound like a fun, cushy way to make a living, but he's paid his dues. In the beginning, he held down numerous jobs, doing everything from driving a school bus to working at Rocky Rococo's to subsidize his gig as Editor-in-Chief of the then nascent The Onion newspaper. Little did he know that he was about to help launch a comedy revolution.
The Onion's success encouraged Rich to take a huge risk and pursue his dream of establishing a career in television writing. He moved to Los Angeles, where he hustled and worked hard, landing on series such as The Dennis Miller Show and Da Ali Show. From there, he was tapped to work as Head Writer on a brand new project: The Colbert Report. Rich worked his way up and is now Co-Executive Producer of the show, as well as a best-selling co-author of I Am America (And So Can You!).
As a fellow writer, I'm in awe of Rich's achievements. I know firsthand how hard it is to succeed in this business. That's why I look at his career with great pride and amazement (and maybe a hint of envy). But no matter how much Rich accomplishes, he's still the same humble Blackshirt from Waukesha we all know and love.
