Jeffrey W. Gaver, MD

Jeffrey W. Gaver, DVM, MD, FACEP Biography (Updated January 2022)
Dr. Gaver specializes in Emergency/Acute Care and Primary Care with board certifications in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. He spends his summers serving as a race track physician, where he provides emergency services to the auto racers and spectators at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. He is also a licensed veterinarian. Dr. Gaver received his veterinary medical degree from the University of Minnesota. (DVM 1970) He completed a residency in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Purdue University.(1971) In 1973 he established Summit Animal Clinic, SC, a small animal practice in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. After practicing Veterinary Medicine for several years, he became increasingly interested in international health. Through his Rotary Club he developed a project in Haiti and led several medical mission trips there. He received numerous awards and honors for his international service, including Wisconsin Veterinarian of the Year in 1981. In 1980, He founded Ventures in People Foundation, Inc, a community service project in Haiti which is still working actively in Haiti. Upon his return from Haiti, he began work on his MPH (Masters in Public Health) degree at the University of Minnesota, but deferred completion of it when he decided to enter medical school. He received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. (MD 1987) He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical academic fraternity. Gaver completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he served as chief resident during his final year. (1991) After practicing Emergency Medicine for five years, he received additional training at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and completed a residency in Internal Medicine. (1996) He then worked in primary care as internist in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin for twenty years. For two of those years, he worked as an internist at the Aurora Sheboygan Medical Center. Throughout his entire career, he flew weekly as flight physician at UW Med Flight, in Madison, Wisconsin. He wrote a book about his flight adventures entitled Fight Log, A Book About Life, And Sometimes Death. Twenty years later he wrote a second book recalling his flight experiences over those years. It is entitled Epilogue, Stories of Hoping, Coping, Inspiration and Redemption. Gaver was also the Medical Director of the Milwaukee Mile Race track for ten years. He served as Medical Director of the Road America Race Track in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin for 22 years. Following retirement from full time Internal Medicine in 2013, Dr. Gaver worked with Diversified Care as an Urgent Care Physician. In 2015 he moved to Sun City, Arizona, and in January 2015 he joined the medical staff of Health Services at Arizona State University (ASU). He served there as an urgent care and a primary care physician in student health for three years. He also worked with their Department of Animal Care Technology providing medical consultation and occupational medicine services. He still actively teaches Advanced Life Support classes. At ASU he interacted through clinical mentoring and lecturing of the MAYO internal medicine residents that rotated through the student Clinic in the Young Adult Medicine Rotation. Additionally, he was chairman of the Pandemic Medical Sub-committee for ASU. After retiring from ASU in 2018, he joined MedAire’s Med-Link, a division of Envision Health Care as a medical consultant for airline passengers who develop health emergencies during flight. He communicates with commercial airline flight crews through satellite phone to manage health problems that may develop in passengers or crew. He also has a part time position as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona Medical College in Phoenix. He works in the Simulation Center teaching Advanced Life Support and emergency medical procedures to medical students. His hobbies are model railroading, fishing, and writing. He has two adult children. He lives in Sun City on Dawn Lake with his wife, Bonnie. He spends his summers in Wisconsin Working at Road America Race Track in Elkhart Lake, WI and occasionally working with various Urgent Care facilities in North Eastern Wisconsin. He is an ordained Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church.
