Paul and I decided to join the Marine Corps and we frequently went to visit the recruiter in Holyoke together. The recruiter, Sgt. Corey, had a camp on a lake somewhere in the greater Northampton area, Paul was a fun guy, a true friend. I didn’t wait to graduate in 1965 instead joined the Corps in 1964, I was assigned to Combat Engineers while Paul went Marine Airwing. When Paul was home on “boot” leave after completing Paris Island recruit training, I happened to be at home on a long weekend and together we drove to my base in North Carolina (750 miles one way) to check in and afterwards immediately drove back to Mass, Paul had to leave for his first duty station the next day. Unfortunately, we never connected again, Paul was killed in Vietnam while I returned unscathed. In his memory I have installed a memorial brick for him at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia. Anyone visiting the museum can find Paul’s brick by going online at:
