Navy, 10 Years

Enlisted twice: Oct'64 - Oct'69; spent 18 months onboard USS Sacramento AOE-1 as a MMFN, and making 1 WESPAC before getting into BUD/S - class40W. Upon completing training I was assigned to UDT 12 in June '67. Team 12 deployed to WESPAC in the fall 0f '67, and my platoon rotated into DaNang in November that year. We rotated back out to an ARG just before the 1st TET Offensive - which hit DaNang hard. I left my platoon while we were still on the ARG in February '68, and went to Subic Bay, PI, to train with a new SDV platoon being formed. I remained assigned to this SDV platoon until I discharged from the Navy in Oct '69. I also competed in Navy sports during the time I was a member of UDT 12, earning a spot on the US Naval Pentathlon Team in 1967, '68 and '69. I joined the Navy Reserves after completing my enlistment; went to college on the GI Bill; helped raise 2 step-sons and 2 daughters; didn't quite finish my degree and I needed a job at this point in time, so in May of 1976 I enlisted - returning to the Naval Special Warfare community again, but this time around I was assigned to UDT 11. Shortly after being back on the " Teams ", the movie " Airport '77 " was being filmed and part of it was shot off the coast of San Diego ( Coronado ). Universal Studios needed Navy divers for this production and UDT 11 was able to provide them. I happened to be one of a couple of dozen UDT 11 personnel who had the opportunity to be part of this historic feature. By now of course the Vietnam era had ended and the pace was much different. I was able to complete my undergraduate degree in July '77, with Chapman University through The Campus Afloat Program. I applied for OCS but was not selected. I did earn a spot again though on the US Naval Pentathlon Team in '77 and '78. In 1979 and '80 I was appointed the coach of this Navy athletic team. In November of 1981 I was honorably discharged and returned to the civilian world.
