About Miss Mary Downie Black was the daughter of Thomas [b. 1863] and Elizabeth Robertson [b. 1869] Black, both were born in Scotland. Mary D. Black, was in school before the age of 5. Miss Black was a graduate of Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was a well loved teacher of English Language, poetry and drama at South Division High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1922 until September 1964. Mary Black was deeply committed to giving every student an opportunity to excel in the areas where their strengths lay. Miss Black's dedication extended beyond the classroom. She directed class plays, coached students for oratorical competitions. Miss Black was chair of the English Honors Committee and advisor of the Century Literary Society at South Division. She was an avid promoter of the Cardinal football and basketball teams and led the Shoulder-to-Shoulder cheer from the bleachers at countless number of games. Illness at last, required her to step down from teaching. Miss Black died after a long illness on June 10, 1965. She is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah, Wisconsin, at the site of her mother's family plot with her mother, Elizabeth [1869-1938] and her father, Thomas [1863-1941].
