Frederick E. Newton, 74, of Westport, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 following a brief battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline (LaVault) Newton with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.

Born in Fall River, son of the late Ellis W. and Alice (Smith) Newton, he had resided in Somerset for many years before moving to Westport 9 years ago.

Mr. Newton was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and Bridgewater State College.

He had a very successful career as an English teacher at Somerset High School for 36 years until his retirement in 1999. He had a passion for teaching the art of writing.

Fred enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Fall River Country Club for many years. He loved the camaraderie of friends and family and had a great sense of humor.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his children, Laurie Ferreira and her husband Peter of Raynham and Eric Newton and his wife Natalie of Pelham, NH; two brothers, James Newton and his wife Judy of Somerset and Robert Newton and his wife Dorothy of Raynham; five grandchildren, Matthew and Joshua Ferreira and Alex, Julia and Abby Newton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother William Newton.
