About Michael J. Barboza of Chatham, N.J., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Overlook Medical Center, Summit, N.J., after a long illness. He was 64 years old. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at William A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Chatham, N.J. A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, 240 Southern Blvd., Chatham, N.J., on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. Burial will be private. For further information or to send the family a message of condolence, please go to bradleyfuneralhomes.com. Mike, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Fall River, Mass. He graduated from Somerset High School in 1965, and received his BS in mechanical engineering from Lowell Institute of Technology (now UMASS Lowell). Mike and his wife, Sheila West, moved to Northfield, Vt., where he began his work as an air quality engineer. While in Vermont, Mike earned an MS in civil engineering from the University of Vermont. Mike and Sheila moved to Chatham in the late 1970s. He worked for several engineering firms in the New York/New Jersey area. In 2009, he formed Air and Noise Consulting, providing services in air quality and noise consulting. He was a registered PE in New Jersey and Vermont, and was a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He authored/coauthored several publications on the topics of noise and air quality. Mike was a devoted father to their two children, Katie and Nick. He had a passion for knowledge, and loved to share it. He had a deep love of boats, especially Boston Whalers, and was restoring an antique Whaler with his son. He also loved his granddaughter, Adriana, very much, and experienced great joy while watching her over the past year. In addition to his wife, children and granddaughter, Mike is survived by his son-in-law, Joe Salerno and daughter-in-law, Toni Barboza. He was predeceased by his parents, Regina (Costa) and Alfred "Butch" Barboza of Somerset, Mass.
