Gender | Male |
Hometown | San Francisco, California |
About Me | I am a 5th generation Northern Californian, born in San Francisco. My father was in charge of all of the international operations for Kaiser Aluminum, and was an honorary Nana of the Ashanti. I'm a 3d generation Old Blue. My Dad was one of the 'Hurry Up' Class of 1942. My mother joined him after having grown up in NYC. My grandparents of my Dad's side both went to Cal. My grandfather, Ward Bishop 'Buck' Saunders, played Rugby for Cal 1912-1914, then gridiron football when it was restored 1915-16, the first year that Andy Smith was Head Coach at Cal. He also went on to play in the NFL, during its first year of 1922, at least part of the season, for the Toledo Maroons, when George Hallas and Jim Thorpe and Knute Rockne were playing. Jim Thorpe joined the Maroons, but I think it was after my grandfather played for them. I am descended from 6 families on the Mayflower - the Hopkins, the Chilton, the Fuller, the Latham, the Brewster and Winslow families. Stephen Hopkins, my 9th great grandfather, was also at Jamestown. He was shipwrecked going back to England, which was big news at the time. William Shakespeare wrote the play 'The Tempest' inspired by that shipwreck, and named the character 'Stephano' for my ancestor. I am also related to Massasoit Ousamequin, chief of the Wampanoag confederation of nations, whose help and friendship allowed the Pilgrims to survive. He's my 10th great grandfather. His son, Metacomet, also known as King Philip, led King Philip's War against the colony, which was one of the bloodiest wars in North America, in terms of percentages killed. Eli Whitney is my 3 cousin, 6 times removed. While claims about his invention of the cotton gin have been questioned, he's pretty generally credited with the idea of interchangeable parts for machines. Which means you can blame the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and all the problems that flow from them on my family. Sorry! I'm also indirectly related to all but 6 signers of the Declaration of Independence, and every US President, even the ones I'd rather not be. I'm indirectly related to Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Langston Hughes. I just wished I'd have known all this while I was growing up. I've traced my lineage quite far back, and I'm still working on it. But Cerdic of Wessex, first English King, is my 49th great grandfather, and from him, all the Royal families of Europe flow, and thus are related to me. I was a Religious Studies major at Cal, which seemed like a good idea back then. During college, I worked for Bill Graham, and part of the 1969 'Get Yer YaYas Out' Rolling Stones tour, including Altamont. I play the guitar. I was 'Harvey Krishna' in 'Harvey Krishna & the Out-O-Sights', and a part of Instruments of Peace, which released an album. I worked most summers at a church owned summer camp in the Sierra Nevadas - Lodestar. I helped make the cult movie 'Warlock Moon', starting Laurie Walters and Joe Spano. Rand and I were in charge of sets, special effects, and lots of general gopher duties. Google it. Available on DVD. After college, I spent several years hitchhiking around the world, visiting Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany, East Germany, the divided Berlin, Switzerland, Spain, Ceuta, Morocco, Spanish Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Haute Volta, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey, Nigeria, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Zaire, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, and Japan. I also have spent lots of time living in Canada (where I worked one summer), Mexico, Jamaica, Hawaii and Guam. I tried writing a book about my travels, which didn't get finished, so, while working as a waiter at Quinn's Lighthouse, a local fine dining seafood place, and at Narsai's, I took the LSAT and applied to law school. After my JD, I applied to a Master of Laws program in London, England, where I read subjects at the Royal Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University College London, London School of Economics, Kings College, and the School of Oriental & African Studies, receiving a LLM in International Corporate & Commercial Law. I worked for the Honorable Thelton Henderson, a US District Court Judge in San Francisco. I was a staff attorney, and a Special Assistant US Attorney for the US Small Business Administration, and District then Regional Director for International Trade for SBA, covering California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, and the Trust Territories of the Pacific. I taught Law, International Law, International Business, International Finance and other subjects throughout the Bay Area, at both graduate and undergraduate levels. I also became the Senior International Trade Consultant ...(read more) |
