| About | Marilyn died of pancreatic cancer after a brief illness. She was fortunate to have spent the last year of her life at the home of her son Jim and daughter-in-law Tia in Newark, DE, enjoying one of her happiest experiences. She assisted her granddaughters Jamie, 8, Jordin, 6, and Jules, 2, with their successful education and development during the pandemic. |

Following graduation, Marilyn graduated from Duke University in Nursing. She later earned a Master of Nursing and certification as Pediatric Nurse Practioner from the University of Florida.. She practiced at Yale Children's Hospital in New Haven, VA Hospitals in Jacksonville and Gainesville, Hope Haven Hospital in Jacksonville, Alachua School District Health Services, Florida Children's Medical Services. For the final 25 years of her career she worked at the University of Florida College of Medicine Child Protection Team, where she performed medical assessment of child abuse. She was an adjunct instructor at UF, training medical and nursing students and residents on medical issues of child abuse. She was recognized as a forensic expert witness and received multiple awards as a child advocate. She was named by the Florida Nursing Association as Nurse of the Year.
She married Tom Barnes in 1976 and they lived in Gainesville, FL. Her children were Kate and Jim and grandchildren were Jamie, Jordin and Jules.
