About Philip “Phil” E. Harvard (76) was born 04/29/1948 and passed peacefully though unexpectedly at home on Monday morning09/30/2024.
He graduated in the class of ‘66 from Skaneateles Central School, and from Alfred University in ‘71 with a degree in ceramic engineering Phil interned at Syracuse China the summers prior to college graduation and officially began his 41 year career there once he had his degree in hand. When the plant closed in 2009, he alone was asked to remain for several years to facilitate operations to dismantle the plant as he was at that time their environmental manager.
Phil enjoyed gardening, canning his abundant crops and cooking experimental dishes of various cuisines as seen on his favorite cooking shows. He also loved this time of year creating very elaborate Halloween costumes for his children and grandchildren including large paper-mache heads like the Pink Panther, machine sewn bodies and electronics, if character appropriate. In addition, he had a soft spot for stray cats and other creatures that find food and comfort from heated bowls and beds in our garage.
Predeceasing Philip were his parents, Frederick “Ted” and Mary (Chrysler) Harvard, and is survived by Judeth “Judy” (Celender) Harvard, a former high school classmate and his steadfast and loving wife of 27 years; his sister, Cheryl Hartman of Miami, OK; children Christopher Harvard of Iowa, CO; Alexandra Collins of Syracuse; Melanie Harvard (Ed Van Holtz) of Skaneateles and grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as “Grumpy” — Kaeleigh & Connor Collins and Callan & Teagan Van Holtz. There are also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Though perhaps disappointing to some, it was Phil’s emphatic request that no memorial services be held, as he hated to attend them. We hope that you will remember him as you knew him in your own special way.
