About Richard Sweetman died at his home in Las Vegas in June of natural causes. He was 68 years old.
Rich was born in Schenectady May 2, 1956 to Richard F. and Mary K. Sweetman. Older brother to sisters Elizabeth and Katherine, Rich graduated from Skaneateles High School and McGill University. He worked for many years as a systems analyst for EG&G and General Electric in New Jersey then returned to central New York to pursue his love of the outdoors. He cycled extensively throughout the MidAtlantic and New England states, he was a season pass holder at Greek Peak, and he sailed. He taught sailing knots to his nieces and nephew after they mastered tying their shoelaces. Rich read widely and his personal library numbered hundreds of volumes with special emphasis on military history and languages. He taught himself French and German so he could read philosophical works in their original texts. He studied the night sky and always knew the phase of the moon on any given day. He admired the engineering of railways and from the time he was a small boy had a collection of working models.
Rich was a steadfast presence during his parents' last illnesses, then moved west to experience outdoor life in Montana and Nevada. His philosophy can be summarized by Viktor Frankl, "… the last of the human freedoms – to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."
Rich is survived by his sisters, three nieces and a nephew.
