Sisler High and Northwood C.C. produce 6 Professional Hockey Players

Northwood Community Centre, producer of six pro hockey players, planning its 60h anniversary (All 6 were Sisler High School Alumni)

It’s gone from the humble origin of being a boxcar in 1953 to one of the city’s most storied community clubs.
The Northwood Community Centre, which has produced six pro hockey players including five who made it to the NHL, is putting together plans to celebrate its 60th anniversary this spring.

The six who played shinny at the Burrows Avenue club right beside Sisler High School before going on to the big leagues include former NHLers Dave Herchkosy, Warren Skorodenski, John Bednarski, Jim Dobson, Lex Hudson and WHA Winnipeg Jets goaltender Gord Tumilson.

“We think it’s unique to have that number,” said George Vanderlip, who has been a club volunteer for 30 years and president for 11. “Every community centre takes pride that they’ve had somebody (make it big), but we have six of them.

“Gordie Tumilson grew up just a street over from the club and he’s still part of our club. When Skorodenski is in Winnipeg he still visits us. His mom (Winnie) is still active with our club. She’s been coming to our bingo forever.”

There are several keys to Northwood’s success, Vanderlip said. It’s had a great working relationship with the City of Winnipeg and its councillors, and also boasts a dedicated seven-member executive, with several who’ve been part of it for more than 10 years.

It’s also been able to adapt to the community’s needs over the decades.

“In ‘53 the City of Winnipeg put an old unused boxcar on the site,” Vanderlip said.

A building was put in its place in 1955 and it served until a new club was built in 1994 as part of the city’s revitalization program. The current building serves them well, Vanderlip said, but it could use a bigger display case to show off its awards and proud history.

“When we have a social or event everybody seems to all gravitate toward the pictures or memorabilia,” Vanderlip said.

The club’s hall is a popular rental venue for weddings, socials and baby showers. Its 23-acres offers two outdoor rinks, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, beach volleyball courts and a wading pool with a water slide.

This anniversary may be the last big celebration for some of the club’s senior members, so they want to make it special, Vanderlip said, adding it will likely be held in late May or early June.
