About Ruth Constance Wawruck-Hemmett

24 Sep 1944 - 27 Jan 2025

Alumni Class of 1962

On early Monday morning, January 27, 2025, Ruth Constance Wawruck-Hemmett, best known as Connie or Baba, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, left us to be reunited with her husband of 58 years Kenneth William Hemmett. She leaves to mourn her beloved sons and their spouses, Jeff (Cheryl) and Kelly (Kerri), her four grandchildren, Carlynn (Dylan), Katie (Brendan), Connor (Jessica), and Devon; and 2 great-grandchildren Winslow and Wren; in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her OVERVIEW parents, Steve and Elsie Wawruck (nee Krzywonos), as well as her brother Joe, and sisters Carrie and Myrtle.

Connie was born on September 24, 1944, in Winnipeg, MB. She attended Sisler high school where she was active as a majorette, was a cheerleader for the Blue Bombers, and achieved recognition one year with the title of “Majorette of Manitoba”. Following high school, she worked at CP Rail as a keypunch operator. It was here that she met the love of her life Ken Hemmett, and they quickly married and started their own family. Early in their marriage, Connie and Ken left Winnipeg to explore the world with their young sons, initially moving to Calgary, and then internationally as Ken took on a career as Chief Rig Electrician on numerous offshore oil platforms in various locations around the world.

Following their international exploits, they relocated back to Winnipeg where they lived out the remainder of their days, spending many years wintering in Mesa, AZ, and enjoying the joys of their expanding family.

Connie spent her years back in Winnipeg exploring her passions for both History and Art, she obtained her Masters in Slavic History from the University of Winnipeg and was engaged for many years in the pursuit of her doctorate which unfortunately remained unfinished due to health issues. She rekindled her love of art, working in a variety of mediums, holding many shows and sales of her work over the years, and became well known and respected in the local art community.

In 2022, Connie and Ken moved to the Canoe Club in Winnipeg. During her time there, she made many friends, held art and jewelry making classes for the residents, and was engaged as the Secretary for the Residents club. She will be greatly missed by the staff and residents there.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the First Responders, Grace Hospital Emergency and Intensive Care Units. Although she succumbed to her illness quickly, they took outstanding care of her, and helped ensure that she passed peacefully with family by her side.

A private interment will take place on Monday February 3rd at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, with Honorary Pallbearers: Jeff Hemmett, Kelly Hemmett, Connor Hemmett, Dylan Wilgosh, Devon Hemmett and Brendan Howse. Interment will be followed by a celebration of Connie’s life starting at 2pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Manitoba Club, 194 Broadway Ave.

While the internment will be a private event for the immediate family alone, friends and family are welcome and encouraged to join in the celebration at the Manitoba Club. Connie was a vibrant and colourful personality, so in keeping with that, please feel free to dress accordingly vs traditional funeral colours should you prefer to do so.

The family also requests that in lieu of flowers, for those wishing to make a donation in Connie’s memory, please consider the Never Alone Cancer Foundation https://neveralonefoundation.ca/ or to another charity of your choice
