| About | Harvey Swystun Obituary Harvey Paul Swystun July 13, 1948-August 30, 2025 Harvey aka Harv most certainly lived life to the fullest. He loved his family, all the pets who found him and his many friends scattered across his travels. Shelley Curry was Harvey’s loving friend who shared many adventures with him over the years and cared for him as Parkinson's and cancer took its toll on him. Harvey's parents were Olga and Paul, and he was an only boy with 3 sisters-Patricia Pruden, Carole Kowal (Nigel Hopgood), Maureen Marshall (Dave). He was Uncle to Jana Pruden, Colina and Matts Marshall and Great Uncle to Arlo Harvey and Emmi Eloise Marshall. Although Harvey had no children, he loved Daxx and Natina Pelletier as though they were his own. Daxx and Natina were very much a part of his life and were a great source of pride, joy, and comfort to him. Harvey had many enjoyable days building, repairing, hiking, and walking with his good friend Barry Kalinchuk. Tom Haines was also a long-time friend and they talked many hours on the phone philosophizing and reminiscing. Harvey was very proud of his Winnipeg North End roots but was also drawn to the beauty and freedom of the wide open prairies in the Riding Mountain and Watrous areas where his mother was born and his many aunts, uncles and cousins lived and he spent many great times there over the years. Harvey enjoyed doing for others so he started restaurants which allowed him the opportunity to be part of a new community and hopefully provide a good experience to everyone who came to the door. He started up the famous Old Hotel Café in Onanole where the food was great and the times were even greater with Harvey’s hospitality and charisma. In the 2000’s he opened Oak River Inn and was known for his big hearted hospitality there too. Harvey loved music of all kinds and loved to arrange concerts with local bands and singers in his restaurants. Remember Harvey with music, laughter and joy! Di boja! Thank you to the many friends who dropped by to see Harvey and spend some time with him talking about old times and having some good laughs. Thank you also to Raine Graham who was his caregiver for a few months this year so that we could help Harvey realize his wish to stay home. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Erickson Regional Health Centre who lovingly cared for Harvey during his last 10 weeks of his life in their lovely Palliative Care suite. Every member of the ERHC staff from Nursing, Healthcare Aides, Kitchen and Housekeeping were expert at their jobs and made him part of the Erickson Regional Health Centre family. We will never forget this. Special thanks goes out to CRN Sharlyn Jacobson, Nurses Manon, Judy, Rhonda, Lori, Melissa as well as Health Care Aides Erin, Delayne, Roland, Glenbert, Miranda, Benjamin, Marlon, and Deidre whose caring and compassionate expertise gave Harvey the best quality of life he could have in these final weeks. Thank you also to Marney Manuliak, Home Care Coordinator and Mary Nichols, Palliative Visitor Program Coordinator, who arranged for volunteers to spend time with Harvey when we couldn’t be there. Many thanks also to Dr. Breytenbach, Harvey’s doctor who cared for him for many years and enjoyed each other’s stories and life philosophies. Harvey loved reading and read hundreds of books over the years often making notes in the margins. One of these was: ”Be Well. Do Good Work and Keep In Touch.” There is no service. Donations may be made to Parkinson Canada. |
