About | CORNELIUS G. (NEIL) UNRUH Peacefully, after a brief illness, on February 7, 1995, surrounded by his family, Cornelius) G. (Neil) Unruh, died at the age of 89. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth and by four daughters and two sons and their families, Phyllis Ilavsky, Marlene, and Paul Neustaedter, Margaret and Donald Unruh, all of Winnipeg, David and Joanne Unruh of West Vancouver, Geri and Montie Lowe of Winnipeg and Richard and Sandra Unruh of Toronto; 14 grandchildren, Ian and Keith Ilavsky, Karen and Carl Neustaedter, Miriam, Mark and Carol and Robert Unruh, Paul and Christine Unruh, Carmen, Monica and Graeme Lowe, Jesse and Kellen Unruh and two great-grandchildren, Riley and Emma Unruh; a sister Agnes and sister-in-law Helen Unruh of Winnipeg; a sister-in-law Helen Unruh of Abbotsford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Reimer, Anna and Alf Reimer, Albert and Mary Loewen, Elsie and Jake Bergen, Emma and David Schroeder, Irene and Abe Neufeld; by many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. Neil was predeceased by his parents,Gerhard and Helene(Voth) Unruh; two sisters and a brother in infancy; two sisters and a brother as young adults in Russia and in Canada by three sisters, two brothers and a sister-in-law. He was born in Waldheim, South Russia on February 19, 1905, the ninth of 13 children. In 1925, the surviving seven children emigrated to Canada with their parents, settling in Steinbach, Manitoba. For several years, he combined work and study. He graduated from Normal School in 1930, and in the early 1950's he earned his B.A. and B.Ed, degrees from the University of Manitoba. His life's work as a teacher spanned 44 years, including Ekron, Randolph and Montezuma School Districts, as the Principal of the Grunthal School from 1933 to 1959, and as a teacher of mathematics at Sisler High School and at MBC in Winnipeg from 1959 to 1973. He retired at age 69. Neil is remembered for his enjoyment of music and the contribution he made in this area, He played the violin and formed musical ensembles in the schools and communities where he lived and worked, encouraging young people in their musical pursuits. He was committed to serving the community, and worked tirelessly on many committees and boards including over the years, the Steinbach Music Festival, the Manitoba Teachers’ Society Locals, the Steinbach Credit Union, the Crosstown Credit Union, and Concordia Hospital. He was a faithful and devoted member of the Mennonite Brethren Church and served in many capacities. The family extends thanks to the staff of 5B at St. Boniface Hospital for the devoted care they gave our husband, father and grandfather during his illness. In his memory, donations may be made to the Concordia Hospital Foundation or a charitable organization of your choice. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10 at the McIvor Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 Mclyor St, Rev. Wes Dahl and Rev. Abe Neufeld officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be February 9 at 8.00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy, His grandchildren will be the pallbearers.
