About | HOWARD GORDON SMITH Tragically at his residence in Ottawa, Ont, Howard Smith, aged 51 years, Survived by his lone brother Richard; sister-in-law Carol; and nephews Kevin and Jason of Sherwood Park, Alta, and niece Bonnie and her husband Robert Goshko of Edmonton, Alta. He is also survived by his uncle Edward Daye and wife Eleanor; uncles Nick Frunchak and Peter Chaikowsky, and aunts Mary Dynkavitch, Kay Dankewich and Mary Dynkavitch, all of Winnipeg, Man. and numerous cousins, Howard was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Joanna Ivy Smith, as well as by several aunts and uncles. Howard was born and raised in Winnipeg attended Sisler High School and was a member of the Sisler Spartans basketball team. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with B.A. in 1964 and with an MA. in 1966, Howard's entire career was in the field of International Development, He joined the Canadian government in 1966, serving in the International Welfare division of Health and Welfare until 1968 when he was seconded to the United Nations. From 1968 to 1970, he was with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Georgetown, Guyana. In 1970,Howard moved to Vienna, Austria to work with the United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO. Returning to Ottawa in 1874, he joined the Canadian International Development Agency)(CIDA) where he was employed in numerous capacities until his death, During his years in Ottawa, Howard was actively involved in municipal and civic politics, serving as president of the Glebe Community Association as well as alderman for the Capital Ward from 1980-85, Howard will always be remembered for his sensitivity, compassion, generosity and wit. His was a complex nature combining an outrageous sense of humour, a strong sense of justice, and an abiding devotion to those he loved. A memorial service was held at Cropo Funeral Chapel in Winnipeg on Tuesday, August 8 at 2:00 p.m, with the Reverend Wendy Rankin officiating, Eulogies were given by Richard Smith and Henry Huber. Honorary pallbearers were Edward Lawrence and Terry Daye, Ron Balacko, Kevin and Jason Smith. CIDA will also hold a memorial service in Ottawa{during the week of August 14. Flowers are gratefully declined.
