About | WILLEM (WILHELMUS ROELOF) (BILL) STEUR August 19, 1926 - May 2, 2016 Following complications of Parkinson's Disease, Willem Steur passed away on May 2, 2016. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Ruurdje; sons Robert (Bei) and Thomas (Christina); and grandchildren Samantha, Anya, Thomas, Benjamin, and Willem. He was born and educated in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. He served in the Dutch Navy, and worked as a journalist for the largest Dutch newspaper. In 1958 the Steurs came to Winnipeg, where Willem became editor and book reviewer at the Winnipeg Free Press, attending University meanwhile to complete a B.A., B.Ed., and his Teaching Certificate. He taught French at Churchill High School and at Sisler High School, then obtained an M.A. at the University of Ottawa and shortly after became French Language Consultant for the Winnipeg School Division No. 1. He wrote and hosted television series on audio-lingual teaching methods (CBC - Manitoba School Broadcasts), published various teaching manuals, and was editor of AMPitouFe, the journal of the Manitoba Association of Teachers of French. After retiring from teaching in 1989, he and Ruurdje travelled and enjoyed being grandparents. The family would like to thank the staff of the Holy Family Home for their good care of Willem. According to his wishes cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A family gathering to remember him will be held at a later date.
