Roman was born in Anais Sous Lens, Bethune, France to parents Paul and Paraska, and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1954. He was a proud North End school boy and Sislerite. He graduated from the University of Manitoba B.Sc. Civil Engineering in 1972 and M.Sc. Civil Engineering in 1974. His transportation planning career led him to Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and a return to Winnipeg in 1978. Roman retired from the City of Winnipeg Public Works Department in May 2007 after 29 years of service. His mathematical aptitude did not outshine his artistic side or passion for Ukrainian dance. He was a member of Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Winnipeg and Shumka Dancers of Edmonton. He was artistic director of Dunay Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in Edmonton, and co-founded Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in Calgary and the Winnipeg School of Ukrainian Folk Dance. Roman was passionate and proud of his Ukrainian heritage. Growing up, he was a member of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM). He later went on to serve the community as board member of Carpathia Credit Union for 24 years, Taras Shevchenko Foundation for nine years, and Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus for three years. Having Type 1 diabetes for over forty years presented Roman with numerous challenges. He faced these defiantly and in his own way. He had utmost respect for Drs. Aoke and D'ascal at HSC, and appreciated their perseverance during his recent medical complications. Roman cherished the gift of friendship, and those who shared his, will miss him terribly.
