About | JOHN TOMANEK September 7, 1941 - January 14, 2012 It is with much sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Tomanek on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Seven Oaks Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. John will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Linda of 40 years, his daughter Brenda Zielke (Glen), son Kevin (Jennifer), daughter Disa Pomanski (Kory), his four grandchildren; Xavier, Logan, Jordan, and Calla, his brother Jerry of BC, and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Tomanek, and nephew, Bobby. John was born in Winnipeg on September 7, 1941, and grew up in the north end where his parents owned a grocery store. He worked for Canada Packers, and then moved on to Agriculture Canada, where he retired from after 29 years. John was a lifelong member of the St. John's Sportsmen Club. He spent vacations with family at their cabins and enjoyed friendships with many of his fellow members. John loved sports. During his retirement when he wasn't watching his grandchildren or his favourite team play he was umpiring baseball or slo-pitch, and timekeeping football with the Manitoba Football Officials Association which included the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His greatest enjoyment was golfing with his grandsons and mini-golfing with his granddaughters where ice cream after the game was a regular treat by Papa. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or St. Anne's Anglican Church, 253 Burrin Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2V 1E6.
