About | GEORGE DENNIS CHAPEL May 5, 1941 - Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba June 4, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta It is with deep sadness that we announce George Chapel passed away peacefully on Monday, June 4, 2018, with his family by his side, at the age of 77 years. George was born and raised in Winnipeg Beach and moved to Winnipeg with his family at age 12. He attended the University of Manitoba, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil) in 1964. George began his professional career with The Loram Group in 1963 as a summer student and in 1964 he was hired as an engineer for Loram International Ltd. After completing assignments in Australia and the United States, he joined Manalta Coal Ltd. as Chief Engineer in 1973. In January 1991, he began his role as President and Chief Executive Officer. It was during his early assignment in Australia that he met and married his wife Betty. George convinced her to move to Canada in 1968 where they began their family and have remained for the past 50 years. Upon retiring, when George and Betty were not chasing after their grandkids, they spent time in Victoria where he loved to quietly watch the harbour activity. George was an avid hockey and football fan. He had a fondness for old cars and smoking his pipe out in his 'shop'. He will be remembered for his generous nature, intelligence and wonderfully wicked sense of humour. His humour was legendary and was intact until he left us. George dedicated his life to his family and career. George will be lovingly remembered by his wife Betty, their children, Jacki (Louis) and Carl (Dawn); his brother Ernest, and sister-in-law Elfrieda; his sisters-in-law, Christine and Patsy; his grandchildren, Milo, Stella and Jasper, nephew Robert (Ann and their children, Nikayla and Colin), and cousins, Carole and Jeanne. George was predeceased by his mother and father, Mary and Henry, brother Jerry, and sister Joan. A memorial service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB), today, June 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
