About ELIZABETH ANN (BETSY) BILECKI On October 22, 2003 Betsy Bilecki died in Winnipeg due to complications arising from internal bleeding. Betsy was born in Lachine, QC, June 28, 1944 but grew up and received her formal schooling in Winnipeg. She worked in Winnipeg for a period of time, moved to Toronto for several years during which time she became involved in organizing group tours to Ukraine, then returned to work and reside in Winnipeg for the rest of her life. Betsy was a progressive forward-thinking person who always was proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She was a longtime member of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians and of the Workers Benevolent Association. She participated in various cultural activities such as dance groups and choirs from her early years, and at the time of her death, she was a member of the Lesya Ukrainka Choir. Betsy strongly supported progressive legislation all of her life and was active in the peace movement from the time that it started during the cold war to the present when she marched in protest to U.S. aggression in Iraq. Betsy was always proudly independent and did things her own way right to the end. Betsy was predeceased by her father Anthony and was survived by her mother Alice; her brother Bill; her nephew Gordon and her nieces, Gail and Diane. A memorial reception is planned for November 14 at the Ivan Franko Manor, 200 McGregor St. Contributions in Betsys name can be made to the Ukrainian Labour Temple Foundation or to the WBA Scholarship Fund, c/o 595 Pritchard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W 2K4.
