Graduation Year Class of 1963
Date of Passing Jul 26, 2011
About WALTER SAMSON With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and mentor, Walter Samson, at the St. Boniface Hospital on July 26, 2011 following a courageous battle with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer). His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 46 years, Gloria; three sons Walter (Krista), Wayne (Donna), and Gary (Brigit); four grandchildren, Joelle, Jared, Walter and Kasia; brother, Nick (Audrey) and Samson, nieces Debora (David) and Nicole and numerous other nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Konstantyn and Antonina. Born in Bielsk, Poland on April 3, 1944, Walter immigrated to Winnipeg in 1948. As a young adult, he worked various jobs in and around Winnipeg before becoming a firefighter with the West Kildonan and Winnipeg Fire Departments. His career as a firefighter was fulfilling and rewarding and after 35 years he retired as a Captain in 2006. Walter will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, strength, compassion, mechanical expertise, and for his love of animals. What he enjoyed most was singing songs from the 1950s and 1960s especially those by Elvis and Roy Orbison and travelling anywhere with Gloria and his sons in one of the family's many Balboa motorhomes. Walter was known for his unconditional generosity. He truly knew the importance of sharing and giving and had a heart of gold . Honey, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Wally: though there is emptiness and sorrow in our hearts you may rest in peace knowing that by touching those who knew you dear, your presence will not only live on in our memories but in our actions and the way we live our daily lives. You have not left this world alone for when God called upon you to join your Mom and Dad a part of us left this world with you. We would like to give special thanks to the staff (Students, Nurses and Doctors) at St. Boniface Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Walter Samson Mesothelioma Memorial Fund (in support of children who have lost parents to this terrible disease), at any branch of the Entegra Credit Union or by calling 204-949-7744. As per his wishes, a private family service will be held Friday, July 29, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel.
