Graduation Year Class of 1962
Date of Passing Aug 15, 2001
About SYLVIA ANNE MACENKO (nee KOHUT) July 8, 1942 - August 15, 2001 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing our beloved sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, Sylvia on August 15, 2001 at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Sylvia was predeceased by her loving husband Alex, her parents Nick and Lily, and her father-in-law Dr. Paul Macenko. Her memory will be cherished by her sisters Elsie (Bill) Wright of Courtenay, BC and Kathy (Randy) Arduini; her brothers Ed (Linda) Kohut and Robert (Marge) Kohut; her nieces and nephews Tannis (Chris) Van Horne, Jeffrey and Alanna Kohut, Crystal, Candace and Nicole Kohut and Jane and Nick Arduini. She also leaves to mourn her passing, her mother-in-law Stephie Macenko; her step-father John Capek and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Sylvia lived in Rosa, MB until her family moved to Winnipeg in 1950. After graduating from Sisler High School, she spent several years working in Edmonton and Winnipeg until moving to Toronto with her husband Alex in 1969. She completed her B.A. at the University of Toronto and worked for many years as an executive assistant for such prominent companies as The Foundation Company and Spectrum Bullock. Sylvia loved living in the city of Toronto and became heavily involved in many of its cultural and sports-related activities. In recent years, she sat on the board of directors for the University Womens Committee. She volunteered countless hours at the Toronto General Hospital Pastoral Group, and was so devoted a Blue Jays fan, her picture was flashed on the Skydome Jumbotron in honour of her birthday. Sylvia supported many other worthy causes, but her greatest passion was the opera and in appreciation of her dedicated work as its vice-president, the Canadian Opera Womens Committee will be establishing a Memorial Scholarship in her honour. Sylvia kept extremely busy with her many activities, but her devotion to her family always came first. She knew and appreciated the gift of a close and loving family and would frequently come to Winnipeg to celebrate special events with us. She took great pride and interest in the growth and accomplishments of her nieces and nephews and her untimely passing will leave a huge void in their lives. Her love also touched the many members of our large extended family. Sylvia was famous for getting people together, whether it was organizing a family reunion or keeping in touch with us by phone, cards or e-mail. During her trips to Winnipeg, she always tried to visit as many people as she could, as they were all so very important to her. Memorial prayers will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St. Funeral service will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 23 also at the Cathedral with Very Rev. Fr. Henry Lakusta officiating. Pallbearers will be; Ed and Robert Kohut, Bill Wright, Randy Ardunini, Lawrence Chubey and Ron Baran. In lieu of flowers, donations, if desired, may be made in Sylvias memory to a charity of your choice. VICHNAYA PAMYAT CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements 586-8044.
