About | JOHN ROBERT MEMRICK John Robert Memrick passed away on June 5, 2020, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, after a battle with cancer. Predeceased by his mother Olga and father Maxim John, he is survived by many relatives and friends. John affectionately and selflessly cared for his mother in her own home for many years after his retirement and before she passed. John was born in Winnipeg on November 23, 1951, and spent his entire life in the city. He attended Inkster, Lansdowne, and Andrew Mynarski Schools in Winnipeg, and graduated with high school standing from St. Vladimir's College in Roblin, Manitoba. He completed courses in Economics, Statistics, Psychology, and Calculus at the University of Winnipeg. John self-described himself on a resume from the 1990s as 'analytical, motivated, works well with people at all levels, works hard to achieve goals, good in oral and written communications, imaginative in financial analysis, interpersonal, with major strengths in business communication and management skills.' He was a people person among his many other traits and had a keen sense of humour. John worked his way up the ladder at the Carpathia Credit Union at branches on Main Street and McPhillips Avenue as a teller, Loans Manager, and finally Manager of the McPhillips Branch. During his 20 year career with Carpathia, he furthered his education by successfully completing several courses through the Canadian Credit Union Institute Fellowship Program and Investment Funds in Canada Program, leading to his designation as a Certified Financial Planner. Based on his expertise and commitment, John received the Bronze Prize for Sales of Ethical Funds from the Credit Union. John was an active participant in community sports. In his youth, John played Division 4 Men's Soccer with the Scorpions. He coached various Garden City Community Club boys and girls youth teams for 20 years to many championships and, most proudly, coached the FC North West Scorpions Boys Soccer team to victory in the MSA Cup, Manitoba's Provincial Soccer Championship. He served on the Board of Directors of the Garden City Community Club for many years, and was the first President of the Manitoba Racquetball Association. John was an avid follower of the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and a fan of the NFL Green Bay Packers and NHL St. Louis Blues. He very much looked forward to lunches with family members and friends at Buffet Square on McPhillips, always finishing with at least one visit to the ice cream bar. A private memorial service and burial have taken place. Special thanks to Father Lukie for officiating. Donations in memory of John can be made to a charity of your choice.
