Date of Passing Apr 08, 2012
About It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Billinkoff on April 8, 2012, at the age of 86. Mom was predeceased by our father, Ben Billinkoff, and by her parents Dorothy and Joseph Segal. She is survived by her brother Sidney Segal, her aunt Eleanor Gunn, her children Martin (Cheryl) Billinkoff and Nancy (Ralph) Hechter, her grandchildren Amanda (Abisaac), Jonathon, Brianne, Daniel (Lianne) and Mira (PJ), and her great-granddaughter Shyla. Mom was a devoted wife she and our father were very much in love. She was a caring, generous and supportive parent, grandparent and great-grandmother. Mom was intelligent and well read. She was strong and resilient when life required it. Our Mom loved Jewish traditions cooking and baking, celebrating the holidays, visiting with friends and relatives. Throughout her life, Mom was very much a people person. She developed life-long friendships when she was young, especially as a teenager at the YMHA, and added to her social circle as the years went by. People liked her. She always had a smile on her face, no matter how she was feeling inside. She treated others with dignity, respect and tolerance. Spending time with family and friends was her most enjoyable experience. The past five years or so were difficult for Mom as her health and memory deteriorated. Moving from her apartment to the Simkin Centre was a big adjustment, but Mom found the strength to cope and adapt much as she had done when our father Ben passed away over 25 years ago. Our mother will be greatly missed by her family, her friends and the caring staff at the Simkin Centre. We especially want to thank Espie Ramos for her kindness and support. Mom loved many and was greatly loved in return. Her funeral took place on April 10, 2012 at Congregation Etz Chaim with internment at the Rosh Pina Cemetary. Pallbearers were Ralph Hechter, Daniel Billinkoff, PJ Dueck, Marv Terhoch, Andrew Terhoch and David Segal. Donations in her memory may be made to the Simkin Centre or the charity of one's choice.
