About | WILLIAM PAUL SOLYPA November 27, 1930 - March 23, 2017 Peacefully, and with family by his side, our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on March 23, 2017, at the age of 86 years, at Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home. William will be lovingly remembered by his wife Bernice, of 64 years, son Brian, daughter Beverly, son-in-law Lee, granddaughter Laura and her fiancé Kevin. William also leaves to mourn his sisters Wanda and Elizabeth, brothers Joseph (Shirley) and Mike (Adele), sisters-in-law Jean Jaworski, Eleanor Jaworski, and brother-in-law Charles Jaworski (Lynn), as well as many nieces and nephews. William was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Modesta Solypa, his sister Anne, and brother Emil. William was born in Winnipeg Beach and attended grade school at South Felsendorf. He attended high school at Gimli and Teulon Collegiate. He then went on to Teachers College in Winnipeg and University of Manitoba where he obtained three Degrees, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education, Masters of Education, and also had a year of post graduate work towards a Masters of Science. William was a teacher at North Felsendorf, Narol, River East School Division and in Winnipeg School Division 1. In the Winnipeg School Division, he became a High School Mathematics teacher and a Department Head at St. John's High School. William subsequently became Vice-Principal at John M. King School and Isaac Newton School, and Principal at Somerset, Shaughnessy Park and Sisler High School. In 1980 he became the Superintendent of Elementary Schools in the Winnipeg School Division 1. He was in charge of 60 elementary schools. William served in various positions on numerous boards and organizations such as member of the Board of Regents at the University of Winnipeg, Chairman of the Provincial Committee responsible for setting and the marking of Grade 12 Mathematics Examinations, served on a Provincial committee that introduced the Metric System in Manitoba, was Vice-President of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Men's Club of Winnipeg, was Secretary of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation and served on Provincial Curriculum committees relating to Mathematics Education. During a number of summer sessions William taught Mathematics Education courses to teachers of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba. William was also co-author of a publication entitled "Metric Activities for Grades 4 to 6" and co-editor of a Mathematics series called "New Dimensions in Mathematics for Grades K to 6". This series was used in schools in various provinces across Canada. William won several awards in the area of Mathematics Education and in the promotion of multiculturalism. William had a long and happy retirement with his wife Bernice and family and they enjoyed spending 20 winters down south in their home in Mesa, Arizona. They were also able to enjoy several trips throughout Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, United States and Canada. William will always be remembered as a loving, generous, compassionate man who always put the needs of others first. The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home, as well as the health care professionals at St. Boniface Hospital and Grace Hospital, and special thanks to Dr. John Mayba and Dr. Ihor Mayba for the care they gave to William. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Fr. John Mostivsky at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg on Thursday, March 30 at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
