About	It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Harold Pollock on July 1, 2008, at the age of 80 years. Harold was born in Winnipeg, the youngest of three children of the late Esther and Abraham Pollock. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Paul and sister-in-law Sue of Oshawa, Ontario, his sister Evelyn and brother-in-law Merv Ginsburg of Flin Flon and Winnipeg and by in-laws Ethel and Bill Kozack. Harold leaves to cherish his memory, Arnice, his beloved wife of 58 years and children Carol Pollock of Richmond, BC, Ellen Leibl and husband Stewart of Winnipeg, MB, Norman Pollock and wife Janet (Lerner) of Edmonton, AB and Ken Pollock and wife Lori (Leinburd) of Scottsdale AZ. He will also be lovingly remembered by grandchildren Alana, AJ and Ian McKenzie of Richmond, Matthew and Leah Leibl of Winnipeg, Shawn and David Pollock of Edmonton, Kevin Pollock of Vancouver, and Taryn Pollock of Scottsdale, sister-in-law Surella Bartel of Chicago, nephews, nieces, cousins, and many dear friends. Harold earned Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education degrees from the University of Manitoba. He spent his thirty-three year career as an educator with the Winnipeg School Division No.1 as a teacher, principal and senior administrator. He taught mathematics at Aberdeen Junior High, Kelvin and St. Johns High Schools. Harold was the first principal of the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre and also served as vice-principal of Aberdeen and vice-principal and principal of Sisler High School. In 1972 he was appointed Superintendent of Secondary Schools and at the time of his retirement in 1984 was Superintendent of Schools. His family is very proud of his integrity and professional achievements. Harold was in the vanguard of curriculum change in mathematics in the early sixties and worked with the Manitoba Department of Education in curriculum revision and teacher education. He was a participant in teacher groups and served on committees for the Manitoba Teachers Society and the Winnipeg Teachers Association. Harold was a founding member and past president of the Manitoba Mathematics Teachers Association and a long time member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He joined the Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba when it was organized in 1990. Harold always had time for family and community. He coached his sons minor league baseball and hockey teams at the West Kildonan and Garden City Community Centres, was a member of the Rosh Pina Synagogue and Menorah Lodge No. 167 A.F. A.M. and served on the Board of Jewish Education. Harold also enjoyed the outdoors and derived much pleasure from activities with his children. The backyard was a playground and baseball diamond in the summer and a hockey rink in the winter. The family's annual camping trips took them across Canada and the United States, Later, Harold enjoyed many activities with his grandchildren, a whole new audience for his jokes and stories. Harold and Arnice shared a number of interests including theatre, symphony and travel but they particularly relished playing duplicate bridge and were a regular partnership at various clubs. They achieved Life Master status from the American Contract Bridge League during the winter of 2000. After retirement Harold and Arnice spent many pleasant winters in Palm Springs, California where they enjoyed the climate, walking, reading, meeting new friends and bridge. During the summers at home, Harold played slow-pitch baseball with the senior All-Stars in Kildonan Park. He was a self-taught computer programmer and delighted in developing and writing software. His hour upon the stage has ended but he will be greatly missed and long remembered. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Harold's physicians, Drs. J. Mayba and M. Kristjanson and his caregivers, especially Tammie-Lee, Andre and Mike. Services were held at Etz Chayim Synagogue on July 6, 2008 with interment at Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Harvey Pollock, Sid Hochman, Howie Sniderman, AJ McKenzie, Ian McKenzie, and David Pollock; honorary pallbearers were Harvey Kimelman, Paul Kettner, Sam Meyers and Harold Richman.
