About WALTER (BUTCH) KROCHAK, MSW
1945 - 2020

It is with great sadness, but with so many wonderful memories, that we share the news of Walter's passing on Monday, June 22, 2020. Butch did so much for so many and never asked for anything in return.
Walter passed away in Calgary, AB at the age of 75 years. Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Butch grew up in the North End, attending Faraday School, Isaac Newton Junior High, and Sisler High School. While attending Faraday School, Butch won the Buzz Horne trophy as the outstanding athlete. In 1963 Butch played wing back for Sisler Spartans, winning the league Championship.
Walter was the first member of his family to attend university, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg and a Master of Social Work from the University of Manitoba.
Walter devoted over thirty years to helping others as a social worker in the Seven Oaks School, Winnipeg #1, and Fort Garry School Divisions. Throughout his career, Walter's colleagues quickly became friends and he developed a number of lifelong friendships, but most importantly he helped hundreds of families.
Walter's greatest passion, other than his family, was playing and coaching fastball. Butch loved nothing more than playing for his team, Tom's Transmission, in a weekend tournament in the heat of the summer. He coached for over fifty years competing at the Provincials, Western Canadians, Nationals and internationally. He spent countless hours serving as a pitching coach and back catcher for his daughter.
Walter, alongside his brother, Doug, was also instrumental in the growth of high school football in the City of Winnipeg. Butch coached the Maples Marauders to their first high school football championship in 1994. He took great pride in this accomplishment, as he was the driving force in establishing the team in 1981.
To Walter justice and fairness were of the utmost importance. In his work as a social worker and volunteering as coach, he worked to level the playing field and to provide opportunity. This was not always the easiest path as it sometimes meant changing the status quo. But Walter always did what he believed to be right and he firmly believed, "that the truth will set you free".
Walter touched and meant so much, to so many people. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Walter was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend who will forever be in our hearts and thoughts.
Walter is survived by his loving wife and best friend of over fifty years, Bonnie Krochak, his daughter Kerry Krochak, son-in-law Darrell Peterson, his brother Doug Krochak and his wife Cindy, and his sister Kardene Campbell. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Brownie and Anne; and his sister Barbara.
