About | ARTHUR GEORGE LADD III August 26, 1948 - March 1, 2019 With his family at his side, holding him and sharing stories of some of his legendary adventures, Art passed away peacefully, at home, after a long and courageous fight. He tried so hard to stay with us, one phrase he used often was "I'm no quitter", but his heart was just too big and he wore it out. Art is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children, Art IV (Lauren), Andrea (Dustin) Gatz, Aaron (Rachelle), Ian Snow (Joanne Meredith) and Jennifer (Melvin) Durden, sister Marion (William) Molter, brother Gerry (Marlene) Curll, brother Tom (Elsie) Keno, sister Noni Keno, brother-in-law Andrew (Jenny) Slack in England, and 11 (soon to be 12) grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur Ladd II, and his mother, Marion Ladd (Hogsden). 16 years ago we were told that Art had only three months to live, so we all consider ourselves very blessed to have had 16 more years of time with him. During those years, he and Shirley travelled several times to England, to the Caribbean and all over the United States, including Hawaii, where he was able to cross Pearl Harbour off his bucket list. He also accompanied Shirley's dad on a tour of the Second World War Normandy landing sites in France. Art was a man of many talents and facets. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, as a member of the St. James Rams football team, and was a PADI certified SCUBA diver (another bucket list item). He graduated in 1972 as a physiotherapist, and worked at Misericordia and Seven Oaks hospitals, before moving to Community Therapy Services, where he joined the Northern Fly-in Program, travelling for many years to various Indigenous communities. Art always had a great love and respect for Indigenous culture and traditions, and was extremely proud to become an adopted member of the Keno family, from Red Sucker Lake First Nation. Many people remember Art as Santa Claus, a role he inherited from his father, and which he took very seriously. For many years Santa visited individual homes, formal parties, and caused great excitement when Santa stepped off the plane in Red Sucker Lake to attend the Band Christmas party. He had some very inventive reasons when asked why he was not travelling with his reindeer! Art was well known for his adventurous palate enjoying any and all things exotic. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, sports shooter, and had an extensive knowledge of firearms. He was also involved for many years with Scouts Canada and with the church Girls Camp. He was a skilled fisherman, as many of us fondly remember fishing with Art. Art was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1971, and his membership was the keystone of his life. He exemplified selfless service to others and was never too busy to respond when called on. Above all else; his proudest accomplishment was as a strong example as husband, father and grandfather. We are very grateful for the outpouring of support and many fond memories of Art that have been shared. There are too many people to thank individually for making this journey with us, but special thanks must go to the staff of the Rehabilitation Unit at Bethesda Hospital, and to Mike Limerick. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Art's life will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 45 Dalhousie Drive, Winnipeg, MB.
