About KEVIN RICHARD SMITH

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Richard Smith, who died peacefully on February 7, 2021, at the Grace Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Kevin was born on July 29, 1955 to Robert, who predeceased him in 1980, and Frances Smith. He lived his life in Winnipeg except for a few years in Grand Marais, MB with Mr. Grey being his constant feline companion. He attended Lord Nelson and Sisler High School and played team sports with Northwood Community Centre.
Kevin's childhood was spent enjoying summers at Grand Beach, making lifelong friends along the way, and eventually realizing his dream by purchasing a cabin in Grand Marais which allowed him to continue making memories with his family and friends to last a lifetime.
Kevin was a hard-working risk-taker throughout his life beginning his varied work career at the Mexican Village in his teens and culminating as owner of Smith Rutherford Transport, of which he was extremely proud.
On April 3, 1982 he married Betty Anne McConaghy (nee Dawyduik) treasuring 31 years of marriage, before his dear wife's passing in 2013. Together, they welcomed a beautiful daughter Laura to their family.
Music was instrumental to his life, as evidenced by his vast collection of memorabilia and pictures displayed of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and local musicians to name a few.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, with the NFL being his passion, and Tom Brady his favourite quarterback, Super Bowl Sunday will now take on a whole new meaning as he passed away during halftime while listening to the game.
Kevin will be lovingly remembered for his wicked sense of humour, kind and compassionate heart, and generous spirit.
His life was deeply touched by cherished family and friends and he was ever so grateful for each and everyone who reached out to him with words of encouragement, hope, or to simply laugh at or enjoy one of his jokes. A special thank you is extended also to Dawn and her family for being a loyal and dear friend in his life and a supportive angel throughout his journey with COPD.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted family: his mother Frances, daughter Laura, grandchildren, Parker, Emily and Lewis, sister Sandy and brother-in-law Rick Cockrem, and nephews, Ryan and Sean and their families.
Surviving him also, are his Aunt Phyllis, Uncle Terry, David, Laura and Gary Petrishen, Garth Smorang and David Smith of West Virginia.
Special thanks to the staff at the Grace Hospital for their loving care and for Dr. Choptiany and Dr. Ramsey for giving him the gift of hope this past year.
In accordance with Kevin's wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to Covid restrictions, a private family memorial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Manitoba Lung Association or a charity of your choice.
Condolences may be sent to www.mosaicfunerals.ca

for every time you think of me,
I'm right there in your heart."
